Various types of machines have been designed and constructed for handling elongated items, such as bricks, for stacking purposes. One type of machine is a rotary screen assembly that is designed to receive a plurality of elongated items and to hold the items in a position where the items can be easily and accurately stacked. Examples of machines utilizing rotary screen assemblies are disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 5,122,100 (the '100 patent) and U.S. Pat. No. 6,006,366 (the '366 patent).
The machine disclosed in the '100 patent includes a screen drum having a relatively large interior diameter. A delivery mechanism delivers elongated items to the drum, where the elongated items are received and held. The elongated items can be delivered by a conveyor or a dedicated elongated item delivery mechanism. The items are not pre-stacked in advance of delivery to the screen drum.
The machine disclosed in the '366 patent includes a screen drum having a relatively small diameter. A conveyor delivers elongated items to the screen drum, where the elongated items are received and held. The elongated items are not pre-stacked in advance of delivery to the screen drum.
In both the machines disclosed in the '100 and '366 patents, the screen drum is rotated to hold the elongated items and to present the elongated items for stacking. A disk drive mechanism of the machine disclosed in the '366 patent includes a plurality of pins, each of which holds a plurality of items as the pins are rotated around a drum. The items may be removed from the pins and placed onto a board or other surface.
Rotary screen assemblies generally include a screen member (e.g., a mesh or lattice type screen member) and a drive mechanism. The drive mechanism generally includes one or more motor shafts and a drive mechanism. Generally, the drive mechanism is adapted to rotate the screen member so that the screen member rotates relative to the drive mechanism.
