In 1991, Corel expanded the line with two new programs: CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, a graphics suite including CorelDraw, Corel Photo-Paint and several other tools such as a scanner, digitizing pad, paintbrush and a 3D modeling program for vector illustration; and a vector-based drawing program, CorelDRAW Xtra. The Xtra program was a small upgrade to the drawing program, and a complete graphic package for Windows 3.1.
The suite was expanded with the release of CorelDRAW X5 in 2009. CorelDRAW X5 included a number of new features including an improved curve/shape tool, improved gradient and pattern creation tools, and a few minor improvements to the pen tool. The suite also introduced the ability to use brushes for pen tool strokes, and the ability to use the pen tool to edit a vector image in raster graphics mode. CorelDRAW X5 also included a new real-time camera function that was previously available only as a Microsoft.NET download. The suite was also rebranded CorelDRAW Graphics Suite (version 19).
The Graphics Suite continued to grow. It added the ability to import and export EPS and PDF files in 1994, and in 1995 Corel added the ability to import PostScript files. CorelDRAW Xtra also gained the ability to import EPS and PDF files. In 1996, the Photo-Paint program gained the ability to import and export JPEG and TIFF files.
In 2002, CorelDRAW X3 received an overhaul, with the program being renamed CorelDRAW X4. This allowed Corel to more closely tie CorelDRAW to its CorelDraw Publisher, a desktop publishing program.
CorelDRAW Xtra was replaced by CorelDRAW X3 in 1999. CorelDRAW X3 brought a number of new features including support for palettes and layers, improved high-resolution rendering and the ability to import and export PDF files.
CorelDraw 3.5 was first released in 1992 (for Windows 3.x and Windows NT 3.1), and was then expanded with a photo-editing feature named Corel Photo-Paint. CorelDraw 3.6 for Windows NT was released in 1994, and was the first release to be available on CD-ROM. This version was renamed CorelDraw Graphics Suite in 1996, and was re-released as a Windows NT only product in 1998. CorelDraw 3.7 for Windows XP was released in 2000, and was renamed as CorelDraw Graphics Suite in 2002. The current version, CorelDraw Graphics Suite 24, was released on March 8, 2022.
Its technology is similar to Adobe Illustrator, but is not as powerful and has a smaller user community. CorelDraw is very expensive when compared to other vector graphics editors, largely due to the need for an active license. It is also limited to the creation of flat graphics and can not be used for special effects such as 3D rendering. However, CorelDraw is a well supported and reliable tool that is packaged into many well-known desktop publishing suites like QuarkXPress, Scribus, and Microsoft Publisher.
