Weber was born in Portland, Oregon, and grew up in Long Beach, California. He started writing science fiction in his teens, submitting stories to the now-defunct fan magazine New Worlds.[6] After graduating from Long Beach State University, he moved to Orlando, Florida, where he wrote what he called "freewheeling, goofy satire" and sold stories to various fanzines and anthologies.
After various short-term jobs, including an internship in the editorial department of The Washington Post and an entry-level position as a financial analyst, Weber started delivering pizza at night while continuing to write. In 1984, he published his first Hugo Award-nominated work, The Freedom Maze.
After this, Weber wrote several short stories set in the Starfire universe, which were published in several magazines before they were collected in The Freedom Maze. The result was a Hugo Award for Best Short Story and Fantawww! magazine's Fantasy Man of the Year Award. This started a four-year fling with the "Starfire days".
In 1987, various science fiction authors met in Stockholm to discuss a prospective merger between the science fiction and fantasy fiction markets. Weber was invited to attend, and he subsequently joined a small committee formed to oversee the development of this new venture, called the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA). This in turn led to the establishing of the Nebula Awards, given by the SFWA, for the "professional" writers of science fiction and fantasy fiction throughout the various stages of publishing such works.
Although the "Starfire days" were over, Weber was trying to get his next book, The Honor Harrington series, published. So, in 1991, he partnered with Steve White, an editor at Bantam Spectra, to compile and edit a collection of short stories bearing the Beowulf and Starfire logos. This work, titled Beowulf's Children, reached a first printing of only 300 copies, but Bantam reissued it a year later. 7211a4ac4a
