There are several face recognition techniques that have been developed and applied to humans. The primary limitation of current techniques for human facial recognition is the requirement for a frontal image of the face. This limitation is most apparent with the existing techniques that use eigenfaces as a basis for classification [61, 62]. More recent techniques use variations on the classic eigenface algorithm [63] and also use models that are trained on thousands of human faces to capture individual and cultural variation [64]. However, these techniques require a frontal image of the face. The ability to effectively utilize non-frontal images in face recognition is limited by the fact that there is more variation in faces between individuals than there is variation between frontal images. In addition, the frontal aspect of the face may not be the most biologically relevant facial feature. For example, in primates, expression (i.e., the lack of, or reduction of, the display of certain facial muscles) plays a larger role in the recognition of an individual than does the full display of all facial muscles [65]. The specific facial features that are the most important in an individual’s identification likely varies among lemurs, but expression may be highly informative for some lemur individuals. Therefore, applying existing techniques to a non-frontal image of a lemur face is likely to be less effective than applying them to a frontal image. Another limitation of current techniques is that they do not include any of the high-level information present in the human brain in their feature generation and scoring systems. As a result, they do not take into account the subjective decisions made by humans when identifying individuals. For example, a person has the ability to recognize that individuals 1, 2, and 3 are all identical twins, and that person may be able to identify each of these individuals immediately upon first meeting them, even if the person has not met them before. That individual may be less likely to recognize that individuals 1 and 2 are the same person, but might be able to recognize this after seeing photographs of them.
While there is a great deal of interest in identifying individuals of other species, there is a relative lack of knowledge about natural variation in facial morphology in mammals, which is critical for the development of computerized systems for individual identification [2], [60]. Lemur face images were captured in the field with a Nikon D750 digital camera equipped with a Nikon AF-S VR 105mm f/2.8G ED lens. Exposure was controlled using the built-in flash. Images were cropped and converted from RAW format to TIFF and JPG format using Adobe Photoshop CC 2015. Images were taken using a simple, standardized protocol as much as possible, and a second photographer was present to ensure standardized image capture.
Once the lot(s) is (are) installed, the sims2pack file(s) is (are) unpacked and a folder named (for the installation) is created in the Data folder. The files that were in the sims2pack file are unpacked and placed in the folder, and the folder is renamed to match the name of the sims2pack file. 827ec27edc
