The story isn't the primary draw of this game, however. Rather, Overboard offers an overwhelming sense of discovery. The game's environment is a claustrophobic shipwreck, set inside a massive, labyrinthine ship. The procedurally-generated environment is full of secrets to discover, from hidden passages and trapped boxes to secret rooms and hidden passages. Once discovered, these areas can be explored to find things hidden in crates and drawers, or to solve mechanical puzzles. Every time you discover a secret room, you're treated to a unique, interactive sequence. Most of these sequences are in-game cutscenes, taking place on the ship as you investigate a location and uncover its secrets.

You play as a man who has been abducted from his home and taken on board a ship. You wake up in a cell, with no memory of what has happened to you. But you can find clues, and as you solve these clues, the ship's crew begins to question your presence on board. You must work out what you know and what you don't know, and what the crew's motives are. At first, it seems like a simple escape game.

There are two story lines in the game: Boy Camp and Girl Camp. In Boy Camp, the player takes the role of Guy. The camp he works at is a summer camp where he's trying to get some free time as a kid. He succeeds in doing so, but in a surprising twist, he gets stuck in the middle of the woods, and his friend is stolen away by some local woodsmen. Boy Camp is the story of Guy trying to get out of this situation. This is a linear story with some puzzle-solving elements. Girl Camp provides a story for a girl. Here, the player takes the role of Gwen, and the story is that she is waiting for her dad to come pick her up from a summer camp she was attending. The camp is owned by a company called House of Holding. Girl Camp is a simulation game that takes place in what seems to be a real world, and the player's job is to collect all the keys to unlock Gwen's father, set free.
