Subversion was originally designed for RCS-like systems, and it has been extended to use the same commands as RCS. For example, in Subversion the add and rm commands are used instead of the cp and mv commands from RCS. The switch and rm commands support the same keyword arguments as RCS, and thus can be used to test for differences in files or to manipulate unversioned files when rming them.[45]
Subversion has a built-in transaction management system that enables the repository to be updated atomically. If any transaction operation fails, Subversion automatically rolls back the changes and restores the repository to its previous state. In Subversion 1.7 and later, the transaction manager can also be used to synchronize working copies with the repository. Typically, all changes in a working copy must be committed for the transaction manager to synchronize that working copy with the repository. Therefore, developers must commit all changes before switching branches or tags. Similarly, they must commit new files before check-in. In addition, the repository root is never updated except through a checkout or an import. If Subversion is used for managing source code, the repository is considered immutable.
