An alternative amongst the sampled made Steinway grand pianos is the Academy of Music Model 'B' Grand Piano, a slightly cheaper alternative with 15 velocity layers and equally impressive, but slightly crisper, sound.
Cheaper still are the Polish Riva Grand Piano, another lovely sound, and the popular Akai EA-333 Grand Piano, a straightforward, piano-style instrument but lacking Steinway's richness. The best option in this category is the Ivory Sampler Piano, a heavyweight powerhouse with 30 velocity layers and a musical character so good it even manages to stand up to DAWs with complex pitch correction modes.
If you not up for a sampled instrument, there are two options. The best of these, in my opinion, is the previously mentioned Keyscape, a keyboard instrument swiss army knife that delivers a massive sound set in one tantalising package, and pretty much already comes standard with every DAW on the planet. Expensive, yes, but less so than Steinway grand pianos. Having grown up with the older Steinway instruments, I would never have known the difference, but I do admit I'm a big fan of the IKORA models of the last decade, although most of their sound options don't quite compare with Steinway's. However, the classic sound of the IKORA V300 means that it's still an absolute essential for any DAW, and its best features come standard with all its siblings.
Finally, the Vintage Grand Piano offers a more affordable option with four velocity layers. It's a respectable, back-to-basics offering that works well for a wide range of compositions, but be warned - this is not a sound you will find in any DAW other than its own. d2c66b5586
